The Carpentries: Building Communities to Share Research Computing Skills

Biochemistry Seminar Room 231
Jul. 25, 2017
  • 12:00

Software and Data Carpentry, collectively the Carpentries, represent a movement of researchers to build communities of practice around the computational and data needs of research workflows. Many discipline's computational and data management needs are growing faster than their communities can stay ahead of. Through a lightweight and collaborative model which trains researchers as instructors, develops collaborative online lessons, and shares local community development approaches across a global network of institutions, the Carpentries help research organizations develop and share digital skills. These skills are broadly applicable and can both serve research needs in academic and private sector career pursuits. In this talk Executive Director of Software Carpentry, Jonah Duckles will give background on the Carpentries approach to community and capacity building and how it might be applied in your own research community.
