Over the semester break the Department of Biochemistry has taken the opportunity to be involved in community outreach activities.
Staff and postgrad students again represented the Department in the biennial Science Fair, with science based activities for people of all ages. The toddlers made monsters from laboratory gloves, while older children played science detective.
Last week the Department was host to a number of Year 13 students from rural, small, or low decile schools from all over New Zealand in the Otago University Advanced School Sciences Academy programme (OUASSA). The students studied the effect of various foods and exercise on their blood glucose levels in a proper, well equipped science laboratory - something their own schools are unable to provide.
